Bullying
In year 2006, a collaborative research with CABCY was conducted to gain insights to the prevalence of bullying in Singapore.
4315 students (aged 7 to 17) were surveyed using the PRAQ and DINO Map instruments.
The results from DINO Map showed that 94.7% of students subjected to at least on of the 21 encounters such as:
- Being kicked
- Being teased
- Being mimicked
- Being excluded
- Receiving nasty email
- Recieving nasty sms
- Recieving nasty mms
- Recieving prank calls
- Being hit
- Being called names
- Being gossiped
- Being tricked
- Being pushed
- Being criticised
- Being laughed at
- Being sworn at
- Being stalked
- Being given the worse job at group work
- Victim of malicious rumours
- Being ganged on
- Being showned rude fingers
The PRAQ survey found 12.72% of students reporting that they have being bullied on a weekly basis, that is, about 1 in every 8 child.
A more detailed report of this research will be presented in the book written by Ms Esther Ng and Dr Ken Rigby.
Cyber Bullying
A similar research was conducted together with Dr Chelsea Chew surveying 3488 students.
It was found that 25% reported that they had ever been cyber bullied before through at least one of the cyber platforms whilst 31% of them said that they experienced cyber bullying on top of being bullied in school.
