Research on 'Cyber Wellness' - 2008

In the year 2008, HRTD together with Coalition Against Bullying for Children & Youth (CABCY) conducted a survey to gain insights into the cyber lifestyle of Singapore’s young. 1226 students from age 11 to 15 were surveyed on their daily usage of the internet. The survey covered areas like gaming addiction, cyber bullying and vulnerability to online threats like fraud, sexual grooming and identity theft.

The survey found alarming statistics on the areas covered. 1 in 8 students aged 13 and above plays computer games from 12 am to 6am, before going to school the next day! 12% of all students surveyed responded that they have experienced cyber bullying at least once. And 16% of students above 13 years of age talks to strangers and gives out personal information about themselves to these strangers online!

The results of the survey shows that more of our youths today are getting onto the internet and they are not well equipped to handle the negative effects and dangers that comes along. A more detailed report of the survey was discussed during the symposium that CABCY hosted in the year 2008.
